Educating Moms-to-Be in Mesa
It all starts with education. “Why isn’t my baby breastfeeding? When am I supposed to schedule immunizations?” These are just a few of the hundreds of questions you and your partner are likely to have as new parents. The maternity nurses at Mountain Vista Medical Center are here to give you answers through seminars and classes. We also offer lactation assistance to help you make sure your baby is getting enough milk.
Labor, Delivery and Recovery
Mountain Vista offers private, spacious, comfortably furnished labor and delivery suites. With an adjustable bed, jet tub, and a sleeper chair for your support person, our suites are designed to increase your comfort during labor. Each suite is also fully equipped to help ensure a safe delivery and outstanding medical care for the first hours of your baby’s life.
If you require a Caesarean section, we also have surgical suites dedicated to women’s services, so you will be able to deliver your baby in an operating room located right in our Women’s Center.
Now Available – Nitrous Oxide for Labor Pain Management
Many women at Mountain Vista Medical Center now have the option of choosing nitrous oxide for reducing pain and lowering anxiety during childbirth. Nitrous oxide (50% nitrous gas, 50% oxygen) is inhaled through a mask or mouthpiece that the patient holds and self-administers. Patients can choose how much gas they use, and how often the use it. The effects of the nitrous oxide wear off after just a few breaths without the mask. There is no effect on newborn sucking patterns, breast feeding, fetal heart rate, Apgar scores or cord blood gases. Additionally, nitrous oxide may be used while standing, sitting or on the birthing ball.
Postpartum: Health, Safety and Comfort for You and Baby
After the delivery and once your health and your baby’s health is determined to be stable, we will move you into one of our 17 private post-partum rooms. In this room, you will continue to receive the excellent care and personal attention that has brought you this far.
The post-partum rooms at Mountain Vista Medical Center are designed to accommodate rooming-in, a special time when your new family gets to be together. The same post-partum nurse will take care of you and your baby. Educational in-room television programming is available, as well as other amenities to make your stay as pleasant as possible.
Nurseries & Special Care Nursery
In the event that rooming-in is not possible, your baby will get all of the extra special care he or she needs in our Level II special care nursery. As a certified Level II special care nursery, we have all the necessary equipment, staff, and facilities to provide advanced neonatal care and stabilize infants born before 32 weeks and weighing less than 1500 grams (3 pounds and 5 ounces).
At Mountain Vista Medical Center, infant security is one of our top priorities. In addition to other security measures, we use a high-tech electronic surveillance system to keep track of each baby. After birth, we place a small monitoring band around your baby’s ankle, where it remains until you take the baby home. The band, which is completely safe, transmits an electronic signal to a nursing station and alerts nurses if a baby is ever moved too close to an exit. Additionally, the Women’s Services department is a secured area, where visitors must be let in by a staff member for your and your baby’s added safety.
We know you will want friends and loved ones to share in your joy when you welcome your new baby to the world. We maintain a family-centered approach and offer open visiting hours and comfortable waiting areas for your guests. Please note, during winter months when RSV is prevalent, siblings are allowed to visit only if they do not have a cold and have not been diagnosed with RSV. This policy is necessary to protect you, your baby, and others. Children who are not siblings may not visit the hospital during these months. See this page for more information about visiting the hospital.

“On Sept. 2, 2010, my husband and I delivered our miracle baby, Abigail, at Mountain Vista Medical Center. All of the nursing staff in the Labor & Delivery Department truly went above and beyond in their service to us. They were professional, courteous and offered us exemplary medical support – all traits that would have made our experience an excellent one, yet I’d like to share with you that they offered us so much more. They were compassionate and caring, and they truly made us feel like family. We chose to have our miracle baby at Mountain Vista Medical Center because it has an intimate and homelike environment to it. We will never forget the staff and the way that we were treated. Thank you to everyone at Mountain Vista for making our delivery so special and memorable.”
