Deciding to undergo partial or total joint replacement surgery for treatment of the hip, shoulder, or knee is a major decision. With innovative resurfacing procedures like MAKOplasty® available in the East Valley area, many patients have found that traditional total joint replacement isn’t the only option available to them.
For patients who do require total joint replacement, there’s no better location in Mesa than the Comprehensive Orthopaedic and Spine Center at Mountain Vista Medical Center. After non-surgical treatment methods have been explored, the patient experience begins with our total joint replacement class, One Step Ahead: Your Educational Guide to Total Joint Replacement. During this class, patients learn everything about joint replacement, from pre-op expectations to instructions for physical therapy.
Patient-Specific Instrumentation Surgery
The orthopaedic surgeons at Mountain Vista Medical Center use various innovative techniques for joint replacement surgery. Some surgeons, for example, perform patient-specific instrumentation surgeries. During one of these procedures, a patient visits Mountain Vista Medical Center for an MRI (or CT scan if patient has a pacemaker).
The surgeon uses the diagnostic images from this scan and 3D modeling software to design an artificial joint designed especially for the patient. This approach eliminates the need for the surgeon to have multiple, standard-sized implants in the operating room. Instead, the orthopaedic surgeon has one implant and it’s the perfect fit.
