Residency Programs

Residency programs at Mountain Vista Medical Center are academically sponsored by the Midwestern University/Osteopathic Postdoctoral Training Institution (MWU/OPTI). There are three residency programs currently offered. Click on a program to learn more.

Mountain Vista Medical Center Residency programs will begin accepting applications for audition rotations for academic year 2016-2017 beginning March 1, 2016. Learn more and download an Audition Student Rotation Request Form here.

Residency programs are designed to meet the professional demands of each specialty and may include hands-on experience, training in cognitive and procedural skills, and access to an accomplished, high-quality team of faculty/physicians. Applicants for residency training at Mountain Vista Medical Center must successfully complete COMLEX I, COMLEX II and COMLEX PE exams to qualify for interviews and American Osteopathic Association match ranking.

Program Amenities

  • Designated conference rooms with teaching aids — including videoconferencing and other technologies.
  • Designated on-call rooms — including showers and phones.
  • Resident lounge, with full access to cafeteria food services.
  • Access to extensive electronic library resources (Midwestern University, Glendale).

General Surgery Residency Program at Mountain Vista Medical Center

The General Surgery Residency Program at Mountain Vista Medical Center offers osteopathic residency training designed to provide the cognitive and procedural skills necessary to graduate superiorly trained surgeons.

Clinical & Research Opportunities

Participants in this residency program have the opportunity to learn from dedicated and experienced medical staff members through hands-on clinical training and in-depth research studies.

  • Participate in daily teaching rounds, grand rounds, morbidity and mortality conferences, weekly didactics, journal and book clubs and osteopathic manipulative medicine seminars.
  • Obtain extensive critical care and emergency training with associated helipad services.
  • Benefit from extensive endoscopy training.
  • Acquire Level I Trauma training and other surgical opportunities (John C. Lincoln North Mountain Hospital, Phoenix).
  • Train in pediatric surgery.
  • Participate in a wide variety of research opportunities with Midwestern University and IASIS Healthcare.
  • Rotate through various subspecialties, including ENT; plastic surgery, ophthalmologic facial reconstruction; urology and neurosurgery.
  • Access a simulation lab for procedural skills and research (Midwestern University, Glendale).

  • Ten operating rooms — including dedicated orthopaedic and cardiovascular surgical suites.

Internal Medicine Residency Program at Mountain Vista Medical Center

The Internal Medicine Residency Program at Mountain Vista Medical Center is a comprehensive, integrated program with a focus on didactics and hands-on experience with a broad range of pathology to develop excellence, confidence and compassion to practice internal medicine in the community.

Internal Medicine Program Highlights

  • Participate in daily teaching rounds, grand rounds, morbidity and mortality conferences, weekly didactics, journal and book clubs and osteopathic manipulative medicine seminars.
  • Experience an extensive range of inpatient and ICU medicine, with emphasis on critical care, central line maintenance and ventilator management.
  • Benefit from dedicated ER and ICU rotations, including night float/duty. Projected rotations include: Cardiology, Pulmonology, Gastroenterology, Infectious disease and Hematology/oncology (inpatient/outpatient).
  • Gain extensive inpatient and critical care training.
  • Participate in dedicated multi-specialty clinics and continuity clinics to learn outpatient office procedures.
  • Participate in a wide variety of research opportunities with Midwestern University and IASIS Healthcare.

Family Medicine Residency Program at Mountain Vista Medical Center

The Family Medicine Residency Program at Mountain Vista Medical Center offers high-quality residency training designed to provide the cognitive and procedural skills necessary to graduate superiorly trained family medicine physicians.

Family Medicine Program Highlights

Learn from dedicated and experienced medical staff members and gain firsthand experience with hands-on clinical training.

  • Participate in daily teaching rounds, grand rounds, morbidity and mortality conferences, weekly didactics, journal and book clubs, and osteopathic manipulative medicine seminars.
  • Provide comprehensive, yet cost effective, primary care for patients of all ages.
  • Foster a patient-centered, medical home model for patients.
  • Benefit from individual resident and family medicine-related rotations.
  • Use a government-compliant electronic health record system and other advanced information technology for more efficient and integrated medical care.
  • Give emphasis on common outpatient procedures including, but not limited to: laceration repairs, skin biopsies and excisions, joint injections and incision and drainage of abscess.

Program Electives

Experience professional growth and development by matching the program’s curriculum to your practice interests and goals. Participate in elective rotations led by practicing specialists, in fields including, but not limited to:

  • Rheumatology

Residents are encouraged to pursue research, practice management and community service work during their training.
