No-Wait Digital Mammography Screening Available At Mountain Vista Medical Center
Computerized Mammography Technology Provides Greater Detection of Breast Cancer

MARCH 12, 2008 – There may be a waiting list for mammography screenings around the Valley, but Mountain Vista Medical Center in Mesa provides digital mammography with same-day appointments available.

“Digital mammography is a relatively new and advanced technology with proven benefits over traditional mammography,” said Frank Sabatelli, M.D., chief radiologist for Mountain Vista Medical Center. “More women are specifically asking for digital mammograms, but not all imaging centers and hospitals provide this option. That means many women find they have to wait for an appointment.”

Compared to traditional X-ray mammography, digital mammography replaces film images with high-resolution computer images of the breast tissue. The technology is particularly beneficial to the 40 percent of women who have dense breast tissue, are under 50 years old, or who are menopausal. According to a New England Journal of Medicine study, digital mammography provides up to 28 percent greater detection of breast cancer in those women.

“The procedure is quicker than traditional mammography, more comfortable for the patient, uses less radiation, and produces instant images that a radiologist can magnify and enhance to provide a more accurate reading,” says Dr. Sabatelli.

Early detection and treatment dramatically increase the survival rates of women with breast cancer, which is the second leading cause of death for American females.

In addition to the benefits of digital technology and the convenience of same day appointments, Mountain Vista strives to provide a pleasant patient experience in its diagnostic imaging department. For patient comfort during mammograms, the hospital uses soft, cushioned foam pads on the mammography equipment.

“This really does take some of the discomfort out of a mammogram,” says Stacey Zuest, RTRM, clinical coordinator of Radiology and mammography supervisor at Mountain Vista. “Our patients tell us they appreciate what we’re doing to make the experience as easy and pleasant as possible.”

With a physician’s order, which is required for a mammogram, Mountain Vista can accommodate most requests for mammography appointments on the same day or within 24 to 48 hours. For more information or to schedule an appointment, contact the hospital’s Diagnostic Imaging Center at 480-358-6450.
